Lesson 8 – The Real Test of CEO

The real test of integrity is when something goes wrong.

The CEOs face similar challenges, when their integrity is put to the test. There is no better way to observe someone than during a crisis.

A Crisis is where some one’s true character shows up.

‘The CEO must have the ability to stay the deck, while the wind is blowing at a gale force,’ says Thome Matisz, CEO, Solotec.

Most of the time in order to avoid loosing customers and loosing on revenue, the CEOs either put their integrity to test or loose it.  But they must realise that 99% of business may not  in control, but not their integrity and character.

How can the CEOs perform better during the testing times, without giving up on their integrity and organisational character.

1. Take Charge

The CEO must take complete charge in testing times. ‘when thing are down, you have to be out in front. You are the captain, it’s your problem,’ says Lee Robets, FileNET.

This is where the directive style of the leader comes into play. The onus of every situation lies on the head of CEO, no one else.

2. Gather Data and information

The CEO must quickly get on to damage control mode. The situation cannot wait.  This happens by the way he assesses the situation or damage, and at the same time gathers information and data on incumbent solution to the issue.

A CEO cannot make a decision without  reliable data at disposal.  Few crisis may start at top level and few from bottom level. A CEO must be vary of both, while dealing with it.

  • Gather facts
  • Get your mind over the facts
  • Consult with your team based on facts
  • Take shortest time to act
  • Do it – act on it

3. Be Visible

A CEO cannot be paralysed with fear about what is right. While he/she empathises, he/she stays strong in dealing with people and situation.

A CEO takes ownership of everything around him and remains visible and connected with all in the team.  That visibility boosts the morale of the team to work towards a solution without fear.

4. Careful Delegation

A CEO carefully delegates discretionary authority to people, who hold high level of integrity and character during testing times.  At this time, what the CEO needs the most are someone or few, who will keep their head high, when others are losing theirs.

5. Strategic Execution

Strategic execution demands that A CEO maintains a broad perspective over time and implements every action meticulously, with no concern for any individual interest and obligation.

A strategic execution demands that the PRO-CON  of action is analysed and decided upon.  A CEO must ensure that a timely communication of every discussion and decision is vital for overcoming crisis.

The real Test of a CEO depends on how a CEO maintains the number even on testing times, while, at the same time,  carries the people along, with high level of integrity and character.
